The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 4 that it will observe National Correctional Officers’ Week to honor the work of its corrections staff. Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider said the observance recognizes the contributions and dedication of those working in correctional facilities.

National Correctional Officers’ and Employees Week is held during the first full week in May each year. The week commemorates correctional officers and personnel who serve in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country, including those who have lost their lives in service as well as those who continue to face daily risks.

“In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, creating ‘National Correctional Officers’ Week’,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. The office added that this annual event is meant to highlight “the excellent work the Ashland County Corrections staff is doing to keep our County safe.”

Schneider encouraged members of the public to thank corrections staff for their commitment. “When you have the opportunity to see one of them, please let them know how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication to excellence,” he said.

The observance aims not only to recognize current employees but also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by correctional workers throughout Ashland County.
