Reagan McCarthy, Communications Director for U.S. Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno of Ohio, stated that “open-border” policies are hurting schools in Ohio due to an increase in illegal migrant children overwhelming the education system. The Bernie Moreno Campaign shared its statement with the Buckeye Reporter on May 30.

“Joe Biden and Sherrod Brown’s border invasion is crippling our communities, including our schools,” said McCarthy, Comms Director for Bernie Moreno Campaign. “Right here in Ohio, our education and health care systems are feeling the detriment of this invasion. Thanks to the Biden-Brown open-border policies, schools are burdened with higher costs and educators are overwhelmed. In November, we will retire both Biden and Brown, deport illegals, and reinstate the effective policies of the Trump administration.”

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), one million migrant children have arrived in the U.S. since 2021. These children enter school systems in cities, introducing funding and staffing problems into public schools. The arrival of over one million migrant children since 2021 has strained public school systems across the U.S., including in Stoughton, Massachusetts, where the number of English learners has doubled.

The WSJ reported that schools have to hire additional staff and increase expenses for things like busing students from homeless shelters to get to school. Many schools are struggling to adapt to the needs of migrant children as many have experienced trauma.

According to the Springfield News-Sun, over the past four years, Springfield City Schools in Southwestern Ohio have experienced a significant increase in non-English speaking students, including a large number of Haitian immigrants. This has led to a 350% rise in English Language Learners (ELL).

Bernie Moreno is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Ohio this November. He was born in Colombia and immigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen at age 18, his website stated. He has previously worked in the auto industry and was Chairman of the Board of ChampTitles.
