The Columbus Blue Jackets face a critical matchup against the Montreal Canadiens following a 5-0 defeat by the Buffalo Sabres, according to an April 11 update. Goaltender Colten Ellis stopped all 37 shots from Columbus, denying the team despite their edge in shot attempts and high-danger chances.
The result has put added pressure on the Blue Jackets as they approach their final three games of the season. With playoff hopes at stake, head coach Rick Bowness said he was encouraged by his team’s effort and chance creation in Thursday’s loss. “Listen, if we play like that again on Saturday, we’ll be fine,” Bowness said. “Their goalie stole the game for them tonight. That was all us in the second period… You hit a couple goal posts, you get that many chances, you think the puck is going to go in. It didn’t go in for us.”
Columbus currently sits two points behind Philadelphia for third place in their division and also trails Ottawa for a wild card spot. The tight standings mean each remaining game is vital as they try to secure postseason qualification.
Reflecting on Thursday’s setback, captain Boone Jenner said there remains strong belief within the team: “We look at the game as a whole and how much we put into that and invested into it… There’s a ton of belief in here.” Bowness emphasized focusing only on immediate tasks: “It’s just taking care of that next shift, the next period… That’s what I want us focused on.”
Recent roster changes include Christiansen returning to action while Greaves starts in net against Montreal. Injuries continue to impact key players such as Damon Severson (shoulder surgery) and Brendan Smith (knee surgery).
As both teams fight for playoff positioning, tonight’s contest is seen as another major test for Columbus with little room left for error.
