The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed a series sweep over the Akron Zips, winning both games of a doubleheader on April 3. The Falcons came from behind in the first game to secure a 9-8 victory and maintained their offensive momentum with another nine runs in a 9-6 win in the second game. This marks the team’s first sweep of the season and improves their Mid-American Conference record to 7-8.
The outcome is significant for Bowling Green, as it demonstrates resilience and strong individual performances that could influence their standing within the conference.
In game one, Brayden Curlis and Zack Horky combined for two home runs and five runs batted in during a pivotal sixth inning rally. The Falcons overcame an early four-run deficit, with Horky’s three-run homer putting them ahead. Akron tied the score again before Carter Mottice scored what proved to be the winning run after an error by Akron’s defense.
Game two featured Alex Laird’s standout performance on the basepaths, where he stole seven bases—a new program and likely conference record—falling just one short of tying the NCAA single-game mark. As a team, Bowling Green stole twelve bases in this contest alone. Pitcher Andrew Heffernan earned his first win as a Falcon by allowing only one run over nearly five innings out of the bullpen.
Additional highlights included multi-hit games from Curlis and Horky across both matchups, with DiLodovico extending his on-base streak to twelve games after being hit by pitch multiple times during the series. Starting pitchers Carrson Sova and Jackson Miller each recorded at least five strikeouts per game.
Looking ahead, Bowling Green will play Ohio State on April 7 before returning home to host Lourdes on April 8. Any updates regarding scheduling will be shared through official university channels.
