The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team narrowly lost to the Toledo Rockets, 73-72, in a closely contested game at Savage Arena on Saturday. The match featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties, with the outcome decided by a three-pointer from Toledo with just over eight seconds remaining.
Bowling Green held a one-point deficit at halftime and played an even second half. The defeat brings the Falcons’ season record to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in Mid-American Conference play. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, against Buffalo at home.
Javontae Campbell led Bowling Green with 29 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Sam Towns contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Troy Glover II added nine points and six rebounds along with one block. Josiah Shackelford scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, while Mayar Wol also had eight points and five boards.
Campbell’s performance moved him up to seventh on Bowling Green’s single-season steals list with a total of 67 this year. He also surpassed Zack Denny for ninth place on the program’s all-time career steals chart.
Head Coach Simon commented after the game: “A good college basketball game. Obviously, we’re disappointed we didn’t come out in the winning column, but nonetheless a game that is a lot of what is right about college basketball. Obviously, we gave away too many possessions, 16 turnovers is really hard to win a game. The way we scored, the way we kept their shooting percentage down, did all those things. The only way you lose that game is giving up possessions and we did far too many. 16 turnovers isn’t going to win you too many games on the road.”
The Falcons will host Buffalo next Tuesday at Stroh Center in a contest set for Medical Professionals Night.
