The Bowling Green State University men’s golf team finished ninth overall at the Babygrande Donald Ross Collegiate in South Pines, North Carolina, according to a March 11 announcement. Freshman Pedro Garcia led the Falcons by winning his first collegiate tournament, finishing first among 100 competitors with a score of 210, six under par.

Garcia’s victory came after a playoff shootout with two other leaders who were tied after the third round. He is the first freshman from Bowling Green to win an individual title since Jose Narro achieved the feat in 2014. Angelo Luciani also performed well for the Falcons, finishing in the top 25 overall.

Team scores showed Garcia shooting rounds of 68, 69, and 73 for his total of 210. Luciani posted rounds of 72, 72, and 74 for a total of 218 (+2), while David Chavez finished at +8, Andrew Lee at +11, and Ethan Irvine at +23. The team ended tied for ninth place with Georgetown at a combined score of +15.

Richmond won the team competition with a score of -6. Other top finishers included George Mason (-3), James Madison (-2), and George Washington (-2). The field featured teams from across several states and conferences.

BGSU Men’s Golf Head Coach John Powers said, “I thought we battled really hard today. It was tough out there. Our game has been progressing over the last couple of months, and we know there are still plenty of shots to save out there. It’s incredible to see the win come from a freshman, especially considering the size and strength of the field. He was rock solid every step of the way and proved his closing ability in the playoff. I think this will be the first of many for him.”

The Falcons will take a short break before competing next at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. That tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 23.
