The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team faced Utah Valley at the Stroh Center on Saturday, December 6. The matchup was noted as possibly the highest NET-ranking contest in the venue’s history. Despite a strong effort late in the game, Bowling Green was unable to overcome a significant deficit and lost 82-71.
Utah Valley led 38-31 at halftime and expanded their advantage to as much as 26 points during the second half. The Falcons mounted a comeback with a 19-7 run that narrowed the gap to just 10 points late in the game, but Utah Valley maintained control for the win.
Javontae Campbell was Bowling Green’s top performer, scoring 24 points along with five rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block. This marked his fourth game of the season with at least 20 points. “BGSU has now had a different 20-point scorer in each of the last three games after Mayar Wol had 21 against VMI and Sam Towns had 27 against Kansas State,” according to team statistics.
Campbell also matched his season-high in assists and led or tied for the team lead in both points and assists for the third time this year. Josiah Shackelford contributed off the bench with 13 points and three steals, tying his season high in that category. Sam Towns played a career-high 38 minutes, adding eight points, six rebounds (a team best), four steals (a career high), and two assists.
Other contributors included Mayar Wol with eight points and three rebounds; Troy Glover II with six points, five rebounds, and an assist; and Justin Thomas who added six points along with three rebounds.
Bowling Green will remain at home for their next game against Aquinas on Sunday, December 7 at 4 p.m., which is part of a doubleheader event featuring both men’s and women’s teams.
