The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team faced Michigan State in an exhibition game at the Breslin Center on Thursday. The contest, which was the season opener for both teams, remained close with five lead changes and six ties. Despite out-rebounding Michigan State 42-41, Bowling Green fell short with a final score of 75-66.
Sam Towns led Bowling Green’s effort, recording 20 points and 12 rebounds. He also made four three-pointers. According to the team, these numbers would have set career highs for Towns if the statistics counted officially, and it would have marked his third double-double as a Falcon.
Javontae Campbell contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, nearly achieving a double-double himself. He also provided a team-high five assists. Josiah Shackelford added 14 points to round out Bowling Green’s double-digit scorers.
“Sam Towns led the way for the Falcons, putting up 20 points and 12 rebounds, including four three-pointers. While the stats won’t count due to the exhibition, all three statistics would have been career-highs for Towns. The double-double would have also been his third as a Falcon while the double-digit rebounding game would have been his seventh,” according to information from Bowling Green.
The Falcons managed to hold Michigan State to just 27 second-half points and forced them into shooting only 31 percent from the field after halftime.
Eleven players saw action for Bowling Green during the game, with eight different players registering points.
Bowling Green will continue its exhibition schedule against Dayton on Monday at UD Arena. The team’s regular season will start on November 3 when they host Texas State at Stroh Center.
