The Bowling Green State University athletic department announced on Mar. 23 the induction of five former baseball student-athletes into the Cast of Honor, a recognition for the most distinguished players in program history. The honorees are Jon Berti, Orel Hershiser, Roger McDowell, Andy Tracy, and Kip Young. Their names and numbers will be added to the outfield wall at Steller Field during a ceremony on BGSU Baseball Alumni Day scheduled for Saturday, April 25.

The Cast of Honor is described as an evolution from retiring numbers to formally recognizing outstanding contributors within competitive venues. This move aims to highlight those who have made significant impacts on Bowling Green’s athletic legacy.

Vice President for Athletics Derek van der Merwe said, “Great programs are defined by how they honor and recognize their past. The resurgence of BGSU baseball is because of the efforts of so many great alumni and supporters who have invested in the success and growth of this program. This baseball stadium should tell their story! It should always be a reminder of how the past and stories will always build our future.” Head coach Kyle Hallock also commented: “A well-deserved congratulations goes out to Jon, Orel, Roger, Andy and Kip on their induction to the Cast of Honor at Bowling Green State University. Each of these legends were high achievers in their era of Falcon baseball. Their achievements and contributions match the best to wear the orange and brown in any sport… We are proud to permanently display Jon, Orel, Roger, Andy and Kip’s names on the wall for everyone that visits Steller Field to appreciate because tradition never graduates.”

Selection criteria include earning an undergraduate degree or making significant progress toward one if pursuing a professional career early; being at least ten years removed from graduation; membership in the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame; exceptional athletic achievements such as national awards or professional success; as well as personal conduct and community standing.

The five inductees join Gary Haas (number six) among retired numbers at Steller Field. They also become part of a larger group recognized across various sports through BGSU’s Cast of Honor initiative.
