The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team secured a 67-63 victory over the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Center. The game was part of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout.
Junior Paige Kohler led the Falcons with 19 points, scoring 10 in the fourth quarter, including a decisive basket with less than a minute remaining that put Bowling Green ahead for good. Kohler was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Johnea Donahue contributed 14 points, while Jasmine Fearne and Emily Siesel, both making their first collegiate starts, added nine and eight points respectively. “Donahue, Fearne and Kohler each had four assists, while Siesel had three assists and a team-leading three steals,” according to the university’s statement.
The game saw several lead changes in the final minutes. After Kohler’s late basket gave Bowling Green a 64-62 advantage, Alaska Anchorage’s Mylee Anderson made one of two free throws. Following a timeout, Siesel grabbed an offensive rebound and made a free throw to extend the lead. Donahue then converted two free throws after being fouled on an inbound pass from Kohler, securing the win for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green started strong in the first quarter but faced challenges as Alaska Anchorage responded with runs in both the second and third quarters. The Falcons overcame an 11-point deficit late in the third period before rallying in the fourth quarter to tie and eventually take control of the game.
With this win, Bowling Green moves to a 2-4 record for the season. The team will return home for its next six games at Stroh Center, beginning with Purdue Fort Wayne on November 30.
