Bowling Green State University’s women’s basketball team achieved a decisive 103-32 victory over Kentucky State University on Wednesday night at the Stroh Center. The Falcons, now holding a 4-4 record, established control early by leading 27-0 after the first quarter. Kentucky State did not score until the opening possession of the second period.
BGSU continued to dominate, extending their lead to 36-2 midway through the second quarter and finishing the half ahead 55-8. By the end of the third quarter, they led 78-18 before closing out with a final margin of 71 points.
Twelve Falcons players scored at least four points each. Taya Ellis led with 14 points and nine rebounds. Johnea Donahue contributed 13 points, five assists, and eight steals—all in the first half—tying her career high for steals and coming within two of the school record set by Lindsay Austin in 2004.
Sofia Moschen recorded a personal best with 12 points off the bench in just 14 minutes, while Paige Kohler added 11 points.
Reflecting on their defensive performance, Bowling Green achieved a rare first-quarter shutout. “It marked the second time in program history that BGSU had held an opponent scoreless in a quarter. The Falcons blanked Detroit Mercy in the second period on Nov. 28, 2022, en route to a 78-29 win at the Stroh,” according to university officials.
The eight points allowed by BGSU in the first half set a new school record for fewest points conceded during that span; previously, Miami managed nine against them in January 2015.
In addition to Donahue’s defensive effort, BGSU attempted 45 free throws during the game—a figure tied for third-most in program history. The all-time record stands at 53 attempts from a game against Youngstown State in February 1990.
During play-by-play action:
– In the first quarter, Bowling Green shot nine-for-fifteen while holding Kentucky State scoreless.
– The second quarter saw Brittany Campbell finally put Kentucky State on the board before BGSU responded with another scoring run.
– The third quarter featured continued dominance as Bowling Green extended its lead beyond fifty points.
– In the fourth quarter, Sofia Moschen scored nine of her twelve total points with three three-pointers.
Looking ahead, Bowling Green will continue its six-game homestand Sunday afternoon against Defiance College at Stroh Center. Additional home games include matchups against Lourdes (Dec. 14), Le Moyne (Dec.16), and Kent State (Dec.20). The contest versus Kent State will serve as Bowling Green’s Mid-American Conference opener.
