The Washington Capitals secured a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on April 15, with Alex Ovechkin recording an assist in what could be his final National Hockey League game.
The match marked the end of the season for both teams, who were eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention after the Philadelphia Flyers clinched third place in the Metropolitan Division. The focus was on Ovechkin, NHL’s all-time leader with 929 goals, as he considers his future in professional hockey. “I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Ovechkin said. “The fans who came here from D.C. and from different spots to watch the game, it was very nice. I can hear them cheering for me and screaming one more year. That’s important. It shows lots of respect. Thanks for the support.”
Jakob Chychrun scored a power-play goal late in the third period to give Washington a decisive lead, assisted by Ovechkin. Chychrun commented on playing despite missing out on playoffs: “It’s hard not being able to play for that playoff spot,” he said. “But I thought we did a good job of just sticking with it and putting our best foot forward and just being pros and going out and trying to get the job done.”
Ovechkin stated he will decide during the offseason whether to return for another season: “We try to win. We try to finish the season on a good note. I hope it’s not my last game,” he said.
For Columbus, Boone Jenner scored early in the second period before Anthony Beauvillier tied it up for Washington later that frame following a pass from Trevor van Riemsdyk.
Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness said he remains undecided about returning next season after replacing Dean Evason midseason: “I just looked at the stat sheet — three hits, 23 giveaways,” Bowness said regarding his team’s performance.
Goaltender Jet Greaves reflected on missing postseason play: “It’s frustrating,” Greaves said. “Obviously, we play to try to get in the playoffs and try to win a Stanley Cup and we fell short of that this year.”
Ovechkin played all 82 games this season and led Washington with 32 goals—marking his twenty-first consecutive season leading or co-leading his team in goals.
