The Cleveland Division of Police announced on Apr. 20 that its Force Investigation Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, following a domestic violence call in the 16500 block of Lipton Avenue.
According to initial information, Fourth District officers responded to reports of a domestic incident involving a 33-year-old male who was outside the residence in a vehicle and allegedly armed with a firearm. The caller informed police that the individual had threatened “suicide by cop,” meaning he wanted officers to shoot him.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the man holding a firearm and gave him verbal commands to drop his weapon. Instead, police said he raised the gun and pointed it at them. One officer then fired their weapon, striking the suspect. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene and provided first aid until emergency medical services arrived to transport him to University Hospital where his condition was initially reported as stable.
The Cleveland Division of Police later provided an update stating that “the suspect in this OIS was pronounced deceased.” Per department policy, “the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office will now assume the investigation.” Wearable camera footage from the incident is expected to be released later in the week.
The Cleveland Division of Police engages residents through social media and blog posts to support crime prevention and public awareness according to its official website. The agency also provides public safety services and shares community updates according to its official website.
As reported by its official website, the division serves residents as Cleveland’s law enforcement agency and maintains its headquarters within city limits.
