Corn futures show slight gains as USDA reports export sales and planting progress

Corn futures were trading slightly higher at midday on Tuesday, April 15, with contracts up by fractions to three cents. The CmdtyView national average cash corn price increased by nearly three cents to $4.05 3/4.

The United States Department of Agriculture reported private export sales of 316,000 metric tons of corn to Mexico for various marketing years and an additional sale of 120,000 metric tons to unknown destinations for the current year. Crop Progress data showed that five percent of the U.S. corn crop had been planted as of Sunday, which is a two-percentage point increase from the previous week and ahead of the five-year average pace of four percent. All states except Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota were at or above their average planting pace.

CONAB data released on Tuesday indicated that Brazil’s corn crop estimate was raised by 1.3 million metric tons to a total of 139.57 million metric tons. The second crop was increased by about 0.68 million metric tons while the first crop saw an increase as well.
