Corn futures trade fractionally lower as export sales and global production shift

Corn futures were trading slightly lower at midday on Thursday, with the CmdtyView national average cash corn price down by half a cent to $4.18 3/4. Export sales for the week of April 16 reached 1.316 million metric tons, which was within trade estimates but marked a three-week low. Despite this, sales remained 14.2 percent higher than during the same week last year. New crop sales totaled 440,110 metric tons, surpassing expectations.

South Korean importers purchased a total of 134,000 metric tons of corn in a private deal overnight. Meanwhile, data from the International Grains Council indicated that world corn production decreased by three million metric tons compared to last month’s figures. Ending stocks for the 2026/27 season are projected to drop by two million metric tons to reach a total of 292 million metric tons.

May corn contracts stood at $4.53 1/2 per bushel, down three-quarters of a cent; nearby cash prices were $4.18 3/4 per bushel; July contracts were at $4.62 1/2 per bushel, down one-quarter cent; December contracts held steady at $4.82 1/4 per bushel; and new crop cash was priced at $4.39 per bushel, down one-quarter cent.
