David M. Toepfer has officially taken the oath of office to become the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. This appointment makes him the chief federal law enforcement officer for the district, representing the United States in all federal and civil litigation.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron, following Mr. Toepfer’s appointment by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi on July 23. The appointment is pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 546, which allows for such appointments when there is a vacancy in the office.

In July, President Donald J. Trump nominated Mr. Toepfer for this position, with his nomination still pending Senate confirmation.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Northern Ohio in this role,” said United States Attorney Toepfer. “Our office will continue working with our federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to protect the public by aggressively enforcing the laws of the United States.”

Mr. Toepfer will oversee a district that covers 40 northern counties in Ohio, serving nearly six million residents from offices located in Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown.

With almost three decades as a prosecutor under his belt, Mr. Toepfer joined the Northern District of Ohio in 2008 as an Assistant United States Attorney based in Youngstown and has held various leadership roles since then.

A Warren native and graduate of Youngstown State University and University of Akron School of Law, Mr. Toepfer’s appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Youngstown-area lawyer to hold this position in over 117 years.
