An elderly couple in Atlanta’s Garden Hills neighborhood survived a home invasion on March 2 after a man entered their house and threatened them, according to a statement released on Mar. 12. David and Mary Hubert said the incident occurred around 7 p.m. while they were watching movies on different floors of their home.
The event highlights concerns about personal safety and self-defense for residents, especially older adults living in urban neighborhoods. The Huberts reported that this was the first serious crime they had experienced in over two decades at their residence.
According to the couple, the intruder, later identified by police as 36-year-old Ramon Darden, confronted David Hubert inside the house. Hubert responded by locking himself in a room and calling 911. Meanwhile, Mary Hubert retrieved her .38-caliber pistol, which she calls “Sweet Jane,” and took up a defensive position upstairs. “I know she’s capable of defending herself,” David Hubert said. “They had better hope they get me and not Mary.” Police arrested Darden inside the home without any shots being fired.
Authorities believe the suspect may have entered through an unlocked side door near the garage, which the homeowners have since secured. The Huberts expressed gratitude toward law enforcement for their response and said preparation played a key role in ensuring their safety during the ordeal.
