Everytown for Gun Safety, a group supported by Michael Bloomberg, has launched a new campaign called “Train Smart” aimed at educating gun owners on safe and responsible firearm practices. The campaign was presented during the recent National Conference of State Legislatures in Boston.

According to Everytown, the initiative is designed to provide lessons such as “The Smart Guide to Buying a Gun,” which offers a one-hour course for those interested in purchasing firearms. The course covers reasons for gun ownership, facts about owning guns, secure storage options, home protection, universal safety rules, and what to consider when buying a firearm.

The organization is also introducing additional classes under the “Train Smart” banner. These include “The Smart Guide to Owning a Firearm,” a two-and-a-half hour session covering similar topics as the introductory class but led by an expert instructor. Another offering is “Raise Standards in Your State,” which encourages participants to advocate for permits, licenses, and instructor certifications at the state level.

A further class titled “Train Smart Gun Safety & Marksmanship” is planned as an eight-hour program focusing on responsible handling and use of firearms. This extended session will address suicide prevention, de-escalation tactics, pistol marksmanship, and other related subjects.

Everytown’s previous efforts include the “Be Smart” safe storage campaign. This effort has drawn comparisons with Project ChildSafe from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which distributes free firearm safety kits through partnerships with law enforcement agencies across all 50 states and U.S. territories.

Dean Rieck of Buckeye Firearms Association said that many new gun owners turn to local retailers and ranges for training and advice on safe practices. He noted that these establishments often serve as primary sources of information for those seeking guidance on lawful gun ownership.

Greg Lickenbrock of Everytown presented the group’s new curriculum at NCSL. The campaign marks an expansion of Everytown’s involvement in promoting what it describes as responsible gun ownership education.

“Train Smart” classes are set to cover various aspects of firearm use and storage but have not yet confirmed whether they will include live range training or where such sessions might be held.
