A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by Buckeye Reporter to Kent State University at Ashtabula seeking detailed records of employee compensation for the fiscal year 2024. The request, sent under the Ohio Open Records Law, §149.43 et seq., aims to obtain comprehensive data about individuals employed by the university during this period.

The requested information includes various data fields such as the fiscal year, employee name, gender, age or year of birth, date of birth (if not exempt), employer name, title or position, department, hire date, compensation amount (including base pay and any additional pay), compensation type (e.g., salary, hourly, stipend, bonus), and employment type (full-time or part-time). The request specifies that if any portion of a record is deemed exempt from disclosure, all non-exempt portions should be released in redacted form.

Buckeye Reporter has emphasized its role in gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency. As a media organization involved in disseminating information to the public, they have requested a fee waiver for accessing these records. Additionally, the requester is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization that assists media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies through FOIA and Sunshine Laws.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
