Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said that the Science of Reading approach is transforming literacy across the state and aiding every child in reaching their full potential.
“Today, I met with Ohio’s Catholic school leaders to discuss the successes we’ve seen bringing the Science of Reading to classrooms across the state,” said DeWine. “The Science of Reading is the best way kids learn how to read! It gets them excited to learn and is key to giving every child the opportunity to reach their full, God-given potential. I appreciate the Catholic Conference of Ohio for having me today — along with Lt. Governor Jim Tressel — to talk about the important work we’re doing as a state to benefit our children.”
DeWine has championed the Science of Reading, a research-based instructional method focusing on phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary development. Ohio implemented this model statewide to improve literacy outcomes for students in both public and private schools.
In 2023, Ohio enacted legislation requiring all K–5 teachers to receive Science of Reading training. The initiative includes $64 million in grants to fund teacher professional development and classroom materials supporting evidence-based literacy instruction.
According to the Ohio Department of Education, early results show a measurable rise in reading proficiency. The department reported a 5% increase in third-grade reading scores since the Science of Reading implementation began in 2024, with gains across all demographics.
DeWine is the 70th Governor of Ohio and a longtime public servant, previously serving as state attorney general, U.S. senator, and lieutenant governor. His administration has prioritized education reform, public safety, and family-centered policies.
The State of Ohio oversees a public education system serving over 1.6 million students. The Ohio Department of Education promotes academic excellence through evidence-based teaching practices and initiatives like the statewide Science of Reading program.
