Gov. Mike DeWine announced the launch of the Department of Education’s new Ohio Attendance Dashboard, a statewide initiative aimed at improving student participation rates by providing timely attendance information.
The dashboard is designed to equip schools and local communities with faster access to attendance data, supporting efforts to ensure students are present and engaged in learning.Â
Chronic absenteeism remains a significant concern in Ohio, with 25.1% of students missing 10% or more of required school hours in the 2024-25 school year, as reported by Cleveland.com. This equates to more than one in four students missing nearly a full month of instruction over the course of the year. The new dashboard delivers weekly data updates, enabling districts and communities to address these patterns locally before they become more entrenched.Â
DeWine made the statement in a social media post announcing the introduction of this new statewide tool developed by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. “This new online tool will give schools and communities faster access to attendance data to help make sure students are in school – ready to learn and reach their full potential.” The dashboard provides public access to attendance trends at the state, district, school, and grade level. It became available immediately following the announcement and supports local monitoring of student participation.
Chronic absenteeism affects approximately 23.5% of K-12 students nationwide, according to an attendance trend analysis by SchoolStatus. Rates remain higher than pre-pandemic levels and are linked to measurable declines in reading and math proficiency as well as reduced high school completion rates. Data tools similar to Ohio’s new dashboard are being adopted in multiple states to provide timely information that supports community-level responses to attendance challenges.
Mike DeWine has served as Governor of Ohio since 2019. A Republican, he previously held positions as state Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Representative, according to official records.
