On January 8, 2025, Governor Mike DeWine signed three bills into law that have been supported by the Buckeye Firearms Association during Ohio’s 135th General Assembly.
Senate Bill 32, sponsored by Senator Tim Schaffer of Lancaster and amended into House Bill 452, grants civil immunity to individuals acting in self-defense. It also extends protection to members and guests of nonprofits, including churches.
Senate Bill 58, co-sponsored by Senators Terry Johnson of McDermott and Theresa Gavarone of Huron, prohibits the requirement for firearm liability insurance or fees associated with the possession of firearms, their components, ammunition, or knives.
Additionally, Senate Bill 148 was introduced by Senator Terry Johnson and later incorporated into Senate Bill 58. This bill prevents financial institutions from tracking firearm purchases and bars government entities from maintaining registries of firearms or their owners.
The Buckeye Firearms Association has expressed strong support for these legislative measures. The new laws are set to take effect in 90 days following the signing.
