The City of Grove City announced on May 1 the launch of the Grove City CARES Pilot Program, a municipal healthcare assistance initiative aimed at supporting workforce growth and helping low-income residents afford health insurance.

City Council President Ted Berry said the program is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation. It is designed to help individuals purchase health insurance through Healthcare.gov while also addressing local labor shortages.

“CARES has two programs,” Berry said. “One is for individuals earning up to $35,000 per year and the other is for couples making up to $50,000 per year. For individuals, we’re aiming to cover approximately two to three months of healthcare costs, which equates to about $400.”

Berry addressed concerns about rising healthcare costs for young workers. “Healthcare has become increasingly expensive,” Berry said. “Young people coming out of college often have to work two or three part-time jobs—juggling multiple roles—just to get by.”

The initiative seeks not only to assist residents but also strengthen Grove City’s economy by improving workforce stability and supporting those who work within city limits as well. “This pilot program will help us explore whether this type of approach can attract workers, strengthen our labor force and support small businesses,” Berry said.

Local businesses in service and retail sectors are expected to benefit from a more stable workforce supported by this program. “Like many communities, we’re seeing restaurants forced to close dining sections because of labor shortages,” Berry said. “Retailers are understaffed and small businesses are struggling to retain employees. This program provides a safety net that can help businesses address those challenges.”

Grove City emphasizes fiscal responsibility, community revitalization, athletics through parks programs, cultural vitality with historical exhibits, and maintains recreation centers along with being recognized as a three-time recipient of Ohio Magazine’s Best Hometown award according to the official website.
