The City of Hilliard Division of Police and Norwich Township Fire Department announced on Apr. 20 that local teenagers can participate in the third annual Hilliard Public Safety Youth Academy, scheduled for June 15-19 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Safety Services Building. The program is open to students entering ninth through twelfth grade for the upcoming school year, with dinner provided each evening.

The academy aims to give high school students a first-hand look at law enforcement and fire service roles while building relationships between youth and first responders. Activities will include tours of both departments, hands-on use of speed radar, scenario-based simulations such as traffic stops and crime scene investigations, building searches, hose line exercises, water spraying, equipment demonstrations, EMS displays, and an obstacle course at week’s end.

Chief of Police Michael Woods said: “We’re excited to spend five evenings showing these high schoolers first-hand what we do as police officers and firefighters. It’s also an opportunity for them to build relationships with their school resource officers, learn about careers in emergency response, and promote safety to their peers.” Many instructors will be Hilliard school resource officers.

Students who complete the program may pursue further involvement by joining Hilliard’s Explorer’s Post 2286 if they are interested in law enforcement careers. Registration costs $30 per student and includes a T-shirt and hat; space is limited. Interested families can register online or contact Community Relations Officer Mike Deaton for more information.
