The House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Jim Jordan from Ohio, is set to conduct a legislative markup session on March 25 at 10 a.m. The committee will review several bills, with two being particularly significant for gun owners.
One of the primary pieces of legislation up for discussion is H.R. 38, known as the “Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.” This bill was introduced by Representative Richard Hudson from North Carolina and aims to provide nationwide reciprocity for concealed carry license holders and residents in constitutional carry states. It currently has support from 177 cosponsors in the House.
John Commerford, executive director of NRA-ILA, stated, “The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed an individual’s fundamental right to keep and bear arms.” He added that Congress should ensure this right extends beyond state lines and expressed gratitude towards Rep. Hudson for his leadership on this issue.
Another bill on the agenda is H.R. 2184, titled the “Firearm Due Process Protection Act,” introduced by Representative Tom Emmer from Minnesota. This legislation seeks to offer legal recourse for individuals who were wrongfully denied firearm purchases due to administrative errors during background checks and aims to enhance congressional oversight over the FBI. Fourteen Republican colleagues have cosponsored this bill.
Commerford remarked, “Year after year, thousands of Americans are erroneously denied their constitutional rights due to clerical errors in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).” He praised Rep. Emmer for introducing what he described as commonsense legislation that provides solutions for correcting these errors while holding the FBI accountable.
The NRA-ILA expressed appreciation towards Chairman Jordan and other pro-Second Amendment members of the House Judiciary Committee for organizing this legislative markup session focused on these key Second Amendment bills.
