Ohio Senator Jon Husted has announced the securing of key funding for the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon. The facility, operated by Centrus, is currently the only uranium enrichment plant in production that is both U.S.-owned and uses U.S. technology.
“It’s in America’s economic and national security interest to invest in uranium enrichment development. The Centrus facility in Piketon is producing a critical resource for our country. This funding is a vital step toward American energy independence and will create jobs and strengthen our domestic energy supply. I will continue to advocate for expanding America’s energy production,” said Husted.
The announcement follows two letters Husted sent to the Department of Energy (DOE) supporting financial backing for the plant. In April and September 2025, he joined other lawmakers in writing to DOE Secretary Chris Wright, emphasizing the importance of domestically produced uranium enrichment at the Piketon site.
Centrus is developing gas centrifuge technology aimed at increasing efficiency in uranium enrichment, which plays a significant role in national and energy security for both the United States and its allies.
Husted’s efforts align with his broader support for American energy initiatives. He has sponsored bipartisan legislation known as the Nuclear REFUEL Act, which seeks to streamline licensing requirements for nuclear recycling facilities to boost nuclear energy production within the country. The bill was approved by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on October 29, 2025.
