Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) hosted a reception on Mar. 9 for his 53 U.S. Military Service Academy nominees and their families.

The event recognized students from across Ohio who have been nominated by Husted to attend one of the nation’s five military service academies. These nominations are an important step for students seeking appointments to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, or the U.S. Naval Academy.

“One of the great honors I have in representing Ohio in the U.S. Senate is to make nominations to our military service academies. I’m confident this group represents the very best of Ohio. The future of our nation is very bright with these talented, driven young people standing up to serve and lead,” said Husted.

To be considered for an appointment, applicants must be nominated by an authorized source such as a Member of Congress and meet academic, athletic, extracurricular, and community service standards. Husted’s office conducted in-person interviews with qualified candidates before making selections.

Members of Congress can nominate up to 55 students each year: up to 15 each for the Air Force, Military, and Naval academies; up to 10 for the Merchant Marine Academy; while no Congressional Nomination is required for admission to the Coast Guard Academy.

Students who receive a nomination must still complete academy admissions requirements and maintain eligibility until arrival on campus, including passing a Department of Defense medical assessment and maintaining strong academic and physical fitness records.
