Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) announced on Apr. 3 that he has joined the bipartisan AI for Mainstreet Act, a bill aimed at providing training and support to American small businesses seeking to use artificial intelligence.
The legislation is intended to help small businesses remain competitive in an evolving digital economy by giving them access to resources and guidance on how to integrate AI into their operations.
“By helping small businesses learn how to apply AI, we can help them get ahead, stay competitive and continue supporting our economy,” said Husted. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), another sponsor of the bill, said, “Our bill will provide training, guidance, and support to ensure more American small businesses are equipped with the tools needed to compete in today’s evolving digital economy.” Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) added, “As artificial intelligence becomes an essential workplace tool, small businesses should not be left behind. This legislation will help provide guidance and training to thousands of Washington small businesses on how they can use AI to help their businesses grow and thrive.”
The Small Business Administration operates Small Business Development Centers across the country that offer support and training for entrepreneurs. The proposed law would expand these centers’ services related to artificial intelligence—including ways for business owners to streamline operations, plan for unexpected events, protect data and intellectual property, and improve cybersecurity.
A companion version of the AI for Mainstreet Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. Mark Alford (R-Mo.) and Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.). The House passed this version on Jan. 20 with a vote of 395-14.
Husted’s involvement with this bill continues his efforts in supporting America’s small business community; he is also backing the Investing in All of America Act which aims at expanding access to capital for rural or low-income communities as well as manufacturing or critical technology sectors.
According to the official website, Husted serves on Senate committees focused on health, education, labor and pensions, small business and entrepreneurship, environment and public works, and aging. He previously served as Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives—where he advanced tax reductions—and later as Ohio secretary of state before joining the U.S. Senate according to his official biography. Husted earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dayton according to his official website.
