Libs of TikTok, a conservative social media account, announced on X that a video posted to the account shows Xenia Community Schools board president Mary Grech taking a parent’s microphone during a discussion on critical race theory (CRT) at a recent board meeting.
According to local reports, the debate over CRT in Xenia intensified following a public meeting where attendees urged the board to confirm that CRT and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices were not present in classrooms. The coverage highlighted extended public comments, heated exchanges, and a proposal by member Jeremy Cox to conduct a curriculum audit focused on CRT-related content. Reporting indicated that Cox was the only member supporting the audit, while President Grech and others opposed it. This dispute reflects broader parental-rights activism in Ohio seeking transparency and limits on CRT-style frameworks in K-12 settings.
Meeting coverage documented approximately two hours of public debate over whether to order a targeted curriculum audit about CRT and related DEI frameworks. Quantitatively, only one of the five board members—Jeremy Cox—supported the audit, effectively resulting in a 1–4 split against proceeding. This indicates minimal institutional willingness to reopen the review despite substantial public turnout. The limited support underscores a gap between parental demands for scrutiny and the board majority’s stance on district practices.
Subsequent litigation introduced concrete timelines: former Lakota board member Darbi Boddy filed suit on December 18, 2024, alleging First and Fourteenth Amendment violations tied to the October 14 meeting. On June 12, 2025, a judge ruled against Boddy, rejecting her claims after reviewing the meeting context and interaction at issue. These dated milestones quantify the legal arc of the controversy from filing to disposition within about six months.
