The Village of Lithopolis council authorized on Apr. 14 the mayor and village administrator to enter into an agreement with the Fairfield County Engineer’s Office and the City of Canal Winchester for a cooperative resurfacing project on Lithopolis-Winchester Road.

This ordinance was declared an emergency measure to allow immediate action, as any delay could cause the village to miss out on participating in the planned road improvements. The intergovernmental agreement outlines that work will take place from about 572 feet north of East Columbus Street at the edge of Lithopolis, extending northward into Franklin County near Winchester Road.

According to documents attached to the ordinance, the estimated total cost for resurfacing is $414,799.46. The financial responsibility is divided among Fairfield County ($240,673.28), Lithopolis ($64,435.81), and Canal Winchester ($109,690.37). Both municipalities will pay their actual share based on final costs provided by Fairfield County through invoices. All work under this agreement is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.

The parties agreed that this collaboration promotes governmental efficiency and improved delivery of public services by taking a regional approach when feasible and cost-effective.

Lithopolis supports its residents through responsive local government according to its official website. The village also maintains key community facilities such as its office and Wagnalls Memorial Library according to its official website, partners with Bloom Township Fire Department for emergency medical services according to its official website, hosts annual events like Honeyfest according to its official website, and works closely with other partners across Fairfield County according to its official website. Known as “the City of Stone” due to historic building stone deposits according to its official website, Lithopolis dates back to 1814 and operates as a statutory village government offering utilities and police protection while collaborating regionally for emergency services according to its official website.

The approved ordinance enables joint efforts between local governments in maintaining infrastructure while ensuring continued service delivery for residents.
