Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said, “U-Haul’s new migration trend shows that more people are coming to Ohio than leaving.” He made this statement in a January 3 post on X.

According to U-Haul’s annual report, which ranks states based on population gain or loss from one-way moves, Ohio ranked 14th for moves into the state in 2024, an improvement from 23rd in 2023. John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president, said in the news release announcing the 2024 rankings, “State-to-state transactions from the past year reaffirm customer tendencies that have been pronounced for some time. Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state. Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast — and particularly California.”
In his post on X, Husted highlighted callohiohome.com, a website providing information about living in Ohio. The site emphasizes Ohio’s cost-of-living being 5.4% lower than the national average and notes that Ohio ranks third in the country for housing affordability. It also mentions that more than 20 Fortune 500 companies are based in the state.
The U-Haul’s 2024 Midyear Migration Trends Report indicates that between January 1 and July 1, individuals moving to Columbus came predominantly from Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. The cities they moved from included Indianapolis; Pittsburgh; Chicago; Washington D.C.; and Detroit.
Jon Husted was adopted and raised in Northwest Ohio’s Williams County. He earned multiple degrees from the University of Dayton and previously served as vice president at the Dayton-Area Chamber of Commerce before entering public service. According to his official biography, Husted has served as Ohio Secretary of State and House Speaker. First elected Lt. Governor in 2018, he was reelected in 2022. Husted and his wife Tina have three children.
