Madison Christian Church Lead Minister Paul Barnes shared a reflection on worship and spiritual longing in a message released on Apr. 22. Barnes drew inspiration from Psalm 63, describing how its author found reasons to praise God even in difficult circumstances reminiscent of the desert.

Barnes said that the Psalms are not only poetry but also honest expressions of life’s joys and struggles, noting that “through all of life’s circumstances, God is worthy of worship.” He highlighted Psalm 63:1: “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” He continued by quoting verse three: “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.”

According to Barnes, these verses show that worship does not require perfect conditions or emotions but can begin as an intentional choice. “We don’t need to ignore hardship or pretend everything is fine. We can acknowledge our needs and struggles, and still choose to lift up the goodness of God in the midst of life’s circumstances,” he said.

Madison Christian Church serves Groveport, Madison Township and southeast Columbus while extending its mission globally according to the official website. The church offers facilities such as a worship center, gymnasium, classrooms and kitchen according to the official website, operates independently without denominational ties according to the official website, and provides ministries for children through adults aimed at fostering spiritual growth according to the official website.

The church has focused on connecting individuals with faith through community programs for various age groups while marking significant developments like establishing its current facilities over several decades according to the official website. In his message about Psalm 63’s lessons from hardship and praise during difficulty, Barnes concluded that both joy and struggle have their place in worship: “Worship is not about putting on a performance. It is about turning your heart toward God.”
