The Mexican government, alongside U.S.-based gun control advocates, is challenging the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) in a case that has reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The case, Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. v. Estados Unidos Mexicanos, involves an attempt to hold American gun manufacturers liable for violence committed by criminals in Mexico.
Oral arguments are scheduled to be heard today, March 4th, at 10 a.m. EST. The Mexican government aims to undo the PLCAA and attribute blame to the U.S. firearms industry for issues related to lawlessness within its borders.
Dean Rieck of Buckeye Firearms Association commented on the situation, stating that Mexico’s actions could impose “billions of dollars in liability on American gun manufacturers.” The Buckeye Institute has asked the Supreme Court to halt Mexico’s lawsuit against the firearms industry.
In related developments, California has expressed support for Mexico’s position against the U.S. gun industry and Second Amendment rights.
