Middletown Board of Health appoints Matthew Clayton as new health commissioner

The Middletown City Board of Health announced on May 26 the appointment of Matthew Clayton as the next Health Commissioner for the City of Middletown Health Department.

Clayton holds a Master of Public Health degree from Wright State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has worked in public health in Southwest Ohio since 1999, including positions with Hamilton County Public Health, the Cincinnati Health Department, and over ten years as Health Commissioner for the City of Springdale. Clayton has also served on both the Ohio Department of Health Advisory Board and the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners Board as Director-at-Large.

“I am honored by the opportunity to serve as the next Health Commissioner for the City of Middletown,” said Clayton. “I look forward to working with the dedicated public health professionals at the department to build upon the successful programs and services provided to the community. In partnership with stakeholders and community partners, we will continue to promote health, wellness, and vitality throughout the City of Middletown.”

Current Health Commissioner Jackie Carter reflected on her upcoming retirement: “Although my retirement is bittersweet, I am looking forward to my next adventure. I will remain a strong proponent of public health and am committed to the health of my community. I love Middletown, and my Middie purple blood will remain an active part of this community.”

Mayor Elizabeth Slamka said, “We are excited to welcome Matthew Clayton to Middletown and confident his extensive experience and commitment to the health of all Middletonians will greatly benefit our community. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Jackie Carter for her years of dedicated service and leadership. Her impact on the health and well-being of Middletown residents will be felt for years to come.”

Clayton’s appointment becomes effective July 6, 2026. He will serve alongside Carter until her retirement on September 1.
