Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has introduced the Stopping Transfers of Public Funds Abroad Act, a bill aimed at preventing welfare recipients from sending money overseas. The legislation seeks to impose penalties on individuals who receive public assistance and conduct international wire transfers.

“For decades, Washington’s failed welfare program rewarded dependency while enabling fraudsters and criminals to exploit the system to take advantage of American taxpayers,” said Senator Moreno. “If an individual has enough cash to send money overseas, they have no business taking welfare benefits from hardworking Americans. The abuse ends now.”

The proposed law would require anyone wishing to make an international wire transfer to certify that they are not receiving public assistance. Those who fail to disclose this information could face a fine of $100,000.
