Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has introduced a bill that would make English the official language of the United States. The proposed legislation would require all official government functions to be conducted in English and mandate that applicants for U.S. citizenship demonstrate their ability to read and understand the language.
Moreno, who is one of the few naturalized citizens serving in the Senate, stated: “JD Vance was right—English is the official language of the United States and, as one of the only naturalized citizens serving in the Senate, I should know. The proudest moment of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, a process that showed me just how foundational the English language is to the American way of life. It’s long past time we enshrine this simple fact into law.”
Similar efforts have been made previously by Senators J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Kevin Cramer (R-ND), who introduced related legislation during the 118th Congress.
