A recent shooting in Washington, D.C., has led to national debate and reactions from public officials and advocacy groups. The incident involved an Afghan national, brought to the United States after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, who allegedly traveled from Washington state to the capital. He is accused of approaching two unarmed National Guardsmen at a Metro station, shooting both with a revolver.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died of her injuries at a hospital. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe remains hospitalized and is reportedly recovering slowly. The suspect was apprehended by nearby National Guard members who responded quickly after hearing gunshots.
Public responses have included condolences and statements on social media. New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani wrote, “I’m devastated to learn of the passing of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard. She was only twenty years old.” U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) posted, “Heartbroken over the news of the passing of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a National Guard member who tragically lost her life in a horrific shooting in DC.”
The statements by Mamdani and Omar were noted as examples where officials expressed sorrow for Beckstrom’s death while not directly addressing the circumstances or attributing responsibility.
Advocacy group Brady United Against Gun Violence also commented on the event. President Kris Brown stated, “I wrote back in Sept in [the Washington Post] that the Trump administration was turning our nation’s capital into a tinderbox – even baiting armed violence,” referencing previous concerns about security conditions in Washington, D.C.
The deployment of National Guard members to assist local law enforcement in Washington has been credited by some with reducing crime rates in recent months. According to data shared online by observers, since the National Guard’s deployment on August 11 until November 26—the day before this incident—there were 24 homicides reported in D.C., compared to 61 during the same period last year.
Mayor Muriel Bowser had previously thanked then-President Donald Trump for deploying the National Guard to help reduce crime and ensure safety for residents and visitors.
The investigation into the shooting continues as officials review all actions leading up to and following this event.
