A trio of Falcons found the back of the net twice on Thursday evening at Walsh University, however the Notre Dame College women’s lacrosse team fell to the WU Cavaliers, 17-7.

After Walsh opened the scoring at the 13:48 mark, NDC responded with goal a minute later as Grace Nickoloff beat the keeper and knotted the score at 1-1.

Megan Dano generated her first goal of the 2023 campaign, to move Notre Dame in front 2-1 with 11:25 left to play in the first. Senior Jamira Mashore picked up the assist on the play.

Despite Nickoloff tallying her second goal of the stanza (and fifth of the season) via a Kendal Johnson assist, the Cavaliers closed the frame on 3-1 run, to lead 5-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.

Charlotte Vari posted a pair of goals in the second quarter on a free-position attempt at the 7:36 mark and a Johnson assist with 5:38 left in the half. However, WU scored three times in the period to lead 8-5 at the break.

Johnson jumped into the second half with pair of goals within the first minute of play. The senior netted her team-leading seventh and eighth goals of the season in rapid succession. After Vari assisted the Atlanta, Ga. native at the 14:28 mark, Joselyn Storm secured the ensuing draw control. Next, the sophomore flew down the field to assist Johnson seven seconds later, cutting the Cavalier lead to one (8-7) with 14:21 left to play in the third.

Walsh answered the Notre Dame run with five goals to end the third period with a 13-7 advantage. WU added four more goals in the fourth quarter, ending the game 17-7 Cavaliers.

Offensively, Johnson paced the Falcons with four points on two goals and two assists. She was joined by Vari’s three (2 goals, 1 assist), Nickoloff’s two (2 goals), and Dano (goal), Mashore (assist) and Storm (assist) with one point apiece.

Piper Hammond and Camille Brathwaite scooped up a team-high three groundballs each on the day.
