NFIB State Director Jared Weiser appeared on NBC4 (WCMH-TV) to discuss Senate Bill 143, also known as “ban the box.” This legislation would prevent private employers from asking about or considering an applicant’s criminal background during the initial employment application process.
The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has taken a leading role in opposing Senate Bill 143. The organization argues that such mandates create challenges for small business owners, especially amid current labor shortages.
“Small business owners believe in second chances, but what they need is flexibility from the state and not mandates that make it harder and riskier,” Weiser said. “They’re willing to look past older or nonviolent criminal offenses, but they just want all the information up front so they can make the best decision for their business, for their employees and their customers.”
According to recent NFIB research, more than half of small business owners are actively seeking workers to fill open positions, but many report difficulty finding qualified candidates. The group maintains that additional hiring regulations could complicate an already challenging environment for small businesses.
