Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost warned on March 5 that scammers are sending text messages to Ohio residents claiming they owe unpaid parking or toll fines and must pay immediately or face court action.
The warning is important because these fraudulent messages can trick people into giving away personal information or money, and may also expose their devices to security threats. The scam uses what appears to be an official court document with a QR code that directs recipients to a website for payment, but the site is not connected to any legitimate court system.
Yost said, “Scammers rely on fear and urgency. If you receive a message threatening court action or demanding immediate payment, take a moment to verify it before responding.” He explained that the so-called notices often mimic government documents to appear convincing, but some details may be incorrect or inconsistent with real court communications. The domains linked in these scams have been traced overseas, and scanning the QR code could install malware on a phone or computer.
Residents are advised not to scan QR codes or click links in unexpected legal notices. Instead, they should verify any claims by contacting the court directly using official contact information. Warning signs include incorrect seals, unfamiliar website addresses, or unusual instructions. Those who believe they have received such a scam notice can file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section at www.OhioProtects.org or by calling 800-282-0515.
According to the official website, Dave Yost leads the Ohio Attorney General’s Office as attorney general. Jonathan Blanton serves as first assistant attorney general overseeing legal operations for the office according to the official website. The office has its main headquarters in Columbus and regional offices throughout Ohio for localized services according to the official website. It seeks to safeguard residents through law enforcement, consumer protection, and state representation according to the official website. The office also provides legal advice to agencies, enforces regulations, prosecutes cases, and extends its services across Ohio through its network of offices according to the official website.
As scams continue evolving in complexity and reach, officials urge vigilance among residents when receiving unsolicited messages related to legal matters.
