The Ohio Department of Agriculture announced on April 2 that applications are now open for the 2026 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, pending confirmation of federal funding from the United States Department of Agriculture.
The program offers financial support to businesses and producers involved with specialty crops, which include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops such as floriculture. Grant awards will range from $25,000 to $150,000. Last year, more than $710,000 was awarded to Ohio organizations through this initiative.
Eligible applicants include food and agricultural non-profit organizations, cooperatives, associations or commodity groups, universities, and research institutions representing specific specialty crop sectors. Projects that benefit only a single private individual or company are not eligible. Proposals must be submitted by email to SCBG@agri.ohio.gov by Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m. EST.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture supports more than 77,000 farms and 129,000 agricultural producers across Ohio while overseeing over 34 million acres of farmland,according to the official website. The department contributes $7.8 billion in cash receipts from production agriculture and adds $132.5 billion to the state economy while supporting over 593,000 jobs,according to the official website.
In addition to grant programs like this one, the department bolsters rural economies and public health by providing drought resources and ensuring food safety across the state,according to the official website. The department also recognized ten Soil and Water Conservation Districts for their service during the 2024 drought.According to the official website, inspectors travel statewide to ensure compliance with regulations.
