The Ohio Department of Transportation announced on March 25 the permanent closure of the Chauncey Cutoff, located between State Route 682 and U.S. 33 in Athens County.

The closure will take effect on April 6. The Park and Ride facility at the Chauncey Cutoff will also be permanently closed on this date.

According to the department, the closure is part of ongoing efforts to improve safety along U.S. 33. Roundabouts constructed last year at U.S. 33 and State Route 682 in The Plains are designed to accommodate additional traffic resulting from the cutoff’s closure.

Following the change, traffic that previously accessed U.S. 33 west via the Chauncey Cutoff will continue on State Route 682 to The Plains and use the U.S. 33 west exit at the roundabouts. Traffic on U.S. 33 currently using the Chauncey Cutoff will instead take Exit 191 to The Plains or Chauncey.

More information about this update can be found according to the official roster page.
