The Ohio House Public Safety Committee has scheduled a third hearing for Senate Bill 273, known as the “Keep Them Safe Act,” on March 11. The bill aims to provide guidelines and civil immunity for the voluntary storage of firearms.
The legislation is considered significant because it addresses legal protections for those who voluntarily store firearms, which supporters say could encourage safer firearm practices. The Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA), a grassroots organization focused on firearm rights, has been actively supporting the bill according to its official website.
Jim Samuel, legislative affairs director at BFA, testified in favor of SB 273 during the committee’s second hearing on March 3. Rob Sexton from BFA also submitted testimony in October and spoke in person when the bill was still under consideration by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Senator Kyle Koehler and passed unanimously as Substitute Senate Bill 273 on November 19, 2025. Its first hearing in the House committee took place on February 17.
According to the official website, Buckeye Firearms Association advocates for individuals’ rights to own and use firearms for self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. The organization concentrates its efforts in Ohio and delivers alerts about laws and politics concerning gun rights. It also provides updates on gun rights legislation, training information, and details about related events according to its official website.
BFA said it will continue to follow this legislation as it moves through the legislative process.
