The Ohio House GOP has announced the passage of legislation by the House Majority Caucus that provides over $2.4 billion in property tax relief to homeowners across the state. The announcement was made on the social media platform X.
According to an official post by the Ohio House GOP on X, the caucus expressed pride in delivering significant property tax relief to Ohioans, describing it as part of their “STOP THE SPIKES” initiative. This statement was accompanied by a link to a press conference on The Ohio Channel, where Speaker Jason Stephens and Representatives Thomas, Hoops, and Roemer discussed the legislation’s aim to address rising home valuations and tax burdens statewide.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that House Bill 344 is central to this GOP-led property tax package. It seeks to counteract an average 34% increase in residential property valuations across Ohio counties in 2024. The bill proposes direct relief for homeowners through adjusted assessment ratios and allocates over $2.4 billion toward local tax offsets. Lawmakers have indicated that this measure will particularly benefit seniors and low-to-moderate income households affected by property reassessments.
Cleveland.com highlights that this property tax relief package is one of the largest in Ohio’s history and aims to prevent significant tax spikes due to recent valuation increases. Fiscal analysts predict that this measure could save the average homeowner between $700 and $1,200 annually over the next two years, depending on location and valuation rate. Stephens described it as “a responsible and meaningful way to keep Ohio affordable.”
The Ohio House Republican Caucus, also known as the Ohio House GOP, holds a majority in the state’s House of Representatives. Their legislative priorities include reducing taxes, promoting economic growth, expanding workforce opportunities, and maintaining fiscal discipline. Led by Speaker Jason Stephens, they emphasize affordability and tax reform as key policy objectives.
