The Ohio Senate’s Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee voted unanimously on March 4 to advance Senate Bill 214. The bill would remove suppressors from the definition of dangerous ordnance in state law.
The committee vote was 5-0, with Republican Senators Terry Johnson, Steve Wilson, Thomas Patton, and Tim Schaffer joining Democrat Casey Weinstein in support. Democratic Senator Hearcel Craig was absent.
SB 214 will now proceed to the Senate’s Rules and Reference Committee before being considered by the full Senate.
The legislation is supported by Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA), which provided testimony through Rob Sexton at a prior hearing. Sponsored by Senator Kyle Koehler, SB 214 proposes to revise the Ohio Revised Code to exclude suppressors and mufflers from the category of dangerous ordnance and eliminate requirements for suppressor registration under the National Firearms Act of 1934.
Buckeye Firearms Association also joined a letter led by the American Suppressor Association supporting both SB 214 and its companion House Bill 331.
On February 27, BFA announced participation in a new federal lawsuit that challenges remaining provisions of the National Firearms Act as unconstitutional after federal taxes on certain firearms and accessories were removed.
According to Buckeye Firearms Association’s official website, the group advocates for individual firearm ownership rights for purposes such as self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. The organization operates primarily within Ohio as a grassroots entity focused on gun rights issues. It provides alerts about laws and political developments affecting gun rights as well as updates on related legislation and events (source).
