The Ohio State University announced on Apr. 15 that it has reached a new settlement agreement with 13 survivors in cases involving former university physician Richard Strauss, totaling $1.8 million or more than $138,000 per survivor.
This latest settlement brings the total number of plaintiffs who have reached agreements with the university to more than half, accounting for 317 survivors and over $61 million in settlements. These settlements are separate from earlier agreements announced at various times since March 2020. According to the university, no taxpayer, tuition or restricted donor funds are used for these payments.
The university said that all former students who filed lawsuits were previously offered substantial settlements through either court-administered mediation or an individual settlement program established in 2021. The participating plaintiffs have agreed to dismiss their claims against Ohio State as part of this latest agreement. However, “these agreements do not prohibit individuals from talking about Strauss’ abuse publicly,” according to the statement released by the university.
Ohio State also said it remains committed to providing medical and clinical support for survivors and their families, covering costs for counseling services and other medical treatment as long as needed since 2019. Survivors can receive this support without contacting the university directly; service provider Praesidium does not share identifying information with Ohio State.
Strauss worked at Ohio State from 1978 until his employment ended in 1998 and died in 2005. In March 2018, a report from a former student-athlete prompted an independent investigation into sexual abuse allegations dating back decades. The university maintains that all relevant information—including thousands of public records—remains available online.
