State Representative Gayle Manning announced on Apr. 20 that ten schools in her district have been named to the 2026 Purple Star Class by the Department of Education and Workforce.
The Purple Star Award is given to Ohio schools that provide significant support to students and families connected to the military, highlighting their commitment to serving those who serve the country.
“It’s vital that we honor those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom,” Manning said. “I applaud these school districts for their strong efforts to support and recognize Ohio veterans and their families within our community.”
The designated schools include Powers Elementary School, Walter G. Nord School, Amherst Junior High School, Marion L. Steele High School, Midview Middle School, Midview High School, Brookside Intermediate School, North Ridgeville High School, North Ridgeville Academic Center, and North Ridgeville Early Childhood Learning Community.
More than 800,000 veterans, active-duty personnel, National Guard members, and reservists reside in Ohio. According to the official website, Manning raised two children with her late husband Jeff Manning according to the official website. She won election for her fourth term in the Ohio House of Representatives according to the official website and earned degrees from Kent State University and the University of Akron according to the official website.
Manning has served on committees including Education; General Government; Finance; Workforce and Higher Education in the House; as well as vice chair of Finance Committee in the Senate according to the official website. Her public service has focused on community and educational matters through roles in both chambers according to the official website. She has received awards such as Educator of the Year from North Olmsted PTA Council and Legislator of the Year from Ohio County Engineers according to the official website.
Manning represents communities in Lorain County as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Ohio House of Representatives. Drawing on a background as an elementary school educator with prior service in both legislative chambers, she is noted as being first woman elected Speaker Pro Tempore according to her official page.
