January 4, 2022 Return to In-Person Learning

5

As the district returns to in-person learning, I know there are concerns given current COVID infection rates in Cuyahoga County. We know that the best mode of learning is in-person because it provides students with quality instruction and support to help them be successful. However, we know this needs to be balanced with the safety and security of the entire school community.

When we return to in-person learning tomorrow, the staff will be ensuring that appropriate masking is followed by all students. Please help us by emphasizing with your children the importance of masking to contain the spread of COVID-19. Area hospitals, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, and the Ohio Department of Health all believe that this is the single best way to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Additionally, the district will continue to monitor case counts and staffing issues to determine when and if it may be appropriate to pivot to remote learning. The following factors will be considered for remote learning:

1. Extreme staffing shortages

2. Student absenteeism

3. Guidance from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Ohio Department of Health, and the US Centers for Disease Control (current guidance is for in-person learning with mandatory masking).

4.  COVID-19 Task Force recommendations

The district’s goal is to remain in in-person learning while using the best mitigation methods to contain the spread of COVID. These include mandatory masking, sanitation, and positive test reporting to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. If staffing and absenteeism become a major issue, I will call a calamity day to assess the situation and make a decision regarding remote learning.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable winter break, and we all look forward to welcoming students back tomorrow.
