Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement announcing the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will award an additional $25 million to the University of Toledo Medical Center for care delivered at its South Toledo hospital.
This week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved the awarding of $25 million in federal funding to the University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) to help offset the hospital’s uncompensated care costs for Medicaid services. Funding from the CMS Supplemental Payment program will assist UTMC in its efforts to improve the quality of healthcare outcomes and services provided to patients covered by Medicaid.
For nearly two years, Rep. Kaptur has worked with UTMC, CMS, and the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) to urge the awarding of this federal funding. The $25 million in CMS funding will be matched by $9.7 million in state funding from ODM. Going forward, ODM – on behalf of UTMC – will have the opportunity to apply for the CMS funding on an annual basis.
“Today will go down in history as the day we helped secure the future of the University of Toledo Medical Center,” said Rep. Kaptur. “UTMC is a foundational pillar of our region. Every day, countless hospital staff, doctors, nurses, professors, and students mask up and show up to deliver the life-sustaining and lifesaving care our community needs, particularly those who are most underserved. As well, UTMC is an economic driver – leading the way on groundbreaking federal research to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans. Stabilizing and strengthening this institution – one of only two wholly public academic centers in Ohio – has been one of my most important undertakings. I am especially grateful for the leadership of Dr. Gregory Postel and Governor Mike DeWine, and to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure for answering Northwest Ohio’s plea for critical federal assistance. Together, advocates and stakeholders from every walk of life banded together to protect and uplift UTMC for the benefit of all.”
