Elementary staff members in all three South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools K-3 buildings participated in an interactive and highly engaging professional development revolving around
Conscious Discipline best practices. Hosted in a live training session via Google Meets and in-person after school during the first week of February, participating staff members
were provided with a Safe Space packet outlining the 5-Step process and associated charts for each step. Those steps involve 1) “I Am,” which involves helping students to
recognize that they are triggered, and what their emotional response is, 2) “I Calm,” which involves helping students choose from several breathing techniques to calm down, 3) “I
Feel,” which involves helping students acknowledge how they feel from a list of emotions, 4) “I Choose,” which involves helping students identify a way that they can feel better
such as reading books and drawing pictures, 5) “I Solve,” which involves helping students looking for solutions to problems. Staff members were trained in how students can learn
self-regulation while keeping students learning in the classroom. Soon, buildings will also feature “Safe Places,” for teachers to relax and relieve any mental pressures they might
be facing during the day. The SEL Schools places a premium on social and emotional learning and awareness and is equipping teachers and staff members with valuable tools and
practices for how to mentor our children.
